Why use a dome port housing?
Shooting in and around the water, GoPro cams (and other action cams alike) are designed for water shots, although trying to shoot at water line levels presents two critical issues.
1) Because the water line is so close to the cam sensor, the 'water skin', where the water surface tension lays, becomes the dominant feature of that shot. While you do still capture detail under water and above water, the impact is lost, and thats if you manage to get the water line perfectly centralised.
2) Because water changes the way light moves, with it being so close to the cam sensor, it creates image distortion, where underwater detail appears to be magnified slightly, resulting in underwater detail being bigger than above. So if your standing waist deep in water, your upper body will appearr nearly twice as small as your lower body in the shot.
Please see the photo above for a great example of these mentioned issues, and how things look WITH a dome (scales corrected, waterline minimised)
Because domes do correct underwater aspect issues, some use them for diving, we do not recommend this. Firstly, aspect ratio issues wont be noticed, as the whole shot will be uniform. And going below 2m, you should be using colour correction filters, as water removes RED from the light colour spectrum, the deeper you go, the more is lost. Magenta filters should be used from just below surface to 5m, and RED beyond that. And you cant fit dive colour correction filters to a cam in a dome port housing. Yes, you can fix colour correction issues in post production, to an extent, but it is far more effective if done while shooting, then only minor adjustments MIGHT be needed in post.
